Asia Cup 2025: Indian Fans Disapprove of Team’s Gesture Toward Pakistan

16 September, 2025 09:58

Dubai: In a heartening display of camaraderie, Indian and Pakistani cricket fans came together in Dubai during the Asia Cup 2025, defying divisive narratives pushed by India’s mainstream “godi media.”

Despite the match tensions, spectators from both nations demonstrated mutual respect and friendship, highlighting the unifying spirit of cricket. Indian fans openly criticized their own team’s conduct, particularly the refusal by Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav and his teammates to shake hands with the Pakistani captain during the toss and again after the match — a move widely seen as unsporting.

“The team was wrong not to shake hands,” admitted an Indian fan, emphasizing that cricket should be enjoyed together by both countries. Several Indian spectators echoed similar sentiments, with one expressing a desire to visit Pakistan, and another consoling a Pakistani friend after Pakistan’s defeat.

A symbolic moment unfolded at the Dubai stadium when Indian superfan Sudhir embraced Pakistan’s iconic “Chacha Cricket,” reinforcing the bond shared by cricket lovers across borders.

In sharp contrast, Indian “godi media” outlets — known for their aggressive, state-aligned rhetoric — continued to stoke hostility, often refusing even to mention Pakistan’s name and turning cricket into a platform for provocation. Anchors and pundits diverted from the game’s spirit, furthering a political agenda instead of promoting sportsmanship.

Yet, ordinary Indian fans appeared unmoved by the media’s divisive messaging. Instead, they celebrated the game alongside their Pakistani counterparts, exemplifying how sport can transcend political barriers.

With at least two more anticipated matches between India and Pakistan in this Asia Cup — including the final — fans from both nations are expected to return to Dubai in large numbers, united not by animosity, but by their shared love for cricket.

While expectations remain low for change in the approach of “godi media” or the Indian government, the people of India and Pakistan continue to prove that friendship and respect can thrive even in the fiercest of rivalries.
