UK Considers Removing Visa Fees for International Skilled Workers

22 September, 2025 17:07

The United Kingdom is weighing a proposal to remove visa fees for highly skilled workers in a bid to stimulate economic growth, according to reports.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s newly established “global talent task force” is reviewing strategies to attract world-class scientists, academics, and digital experts to the UK. According to sources familiar with the discussions, the plan is currently being considered by both Number 10 and the Treasury.

One option under review is a full waiver of visa fees for individuals who have graduated from the world’s top five universities or have received internationally recognized awards. Officials say this measure could make Britain a more appealing destination for high-end professionals.

The initiative comes shortly after the United States sharply increased costs for H-1B visas, widely used in the American tech industry. From Sunday, U.S. applicants are required to pay $100,000 per visa, sparking debate in the UK about the need to enhance its own competitiveness.

Advocates of the reform argue that eliminating visa costs could give Britain a significant advantage in attracting skilled talent, particularly ahead of the upcoming November 26 Budget.

Currently, applicants for the UK’s Global Talent Visa face a fee of £766 ($1,030), which also applies to partners and dependents.

Neither the Treasury nor Downing Street has issued an official statement on the proposal.
