How Much Taxes Are Pakistanis Really Paying on Petrol and Diesel?

25 September, 2025 12:57

ISLAMABAD – September 25, 2025 – Petrol and diesel prices remain painfully high across Pakistan, and now new figures reveal just how much of the cost is made up of government taxes.

A leaked document circulating online shows that Pakistanis are paying nearly one-third of the fuel price as taxes and levies. According to the report, Rs94.89 per liter of petrol and Rs95.35 per liter of diesel are charged in taxes alone.

Taxes on Petrol in Pakistan

For every liter of petrol, consumers are paying:

  • Rs14.37 as customs duty

  • Rs78.02 as petroleum levy

  • Rs2.50 as climate support levy

This adds up to Rs94.89 per liter, showing how heavily the government relies on fuel taxation.

Taxes on Diesel in Pakistan

The burden is similar on diesel users. Each liter of diesel includes:

  • Rs15.84 as customs duty

  • Rs77.01 as petroleum levy

  • Rs2.50 as climate support levy

That equals Rs95.35 in total taxes per liter of diesel.

Public Outrage Amid Rising Inflation

These revelations come at a time when inflation is already squeezing households. Many citizens argue that the government is “squeezing people dry at the pump” by collecting massive revenue while offering little relief.

Global Oil Market Update

Meanwhile, international crude oil prices saw an uptick for the second straight day. The rise was fueled by falling US inventories and export disruptions from Iraq’s Kurdistan region. Brent crude closed at $67.80 a barrel, while WTI settled at $63.60.

With global rates climbing and Pakistan’s heavy taxation, fuel affordability remains one of the toughest challenges for the public.
