What Is NADRA Cancellation Certificate & How to Apply for It? Step-By-Step Guide
According to the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) official website, a Cancellation Certificate (CC) is an official document used to terminate the Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) of a deceased citizen or Pakistani nationals who have formally renounced or surrendered their nationality by acquiring foreign citizenship.
The CC ensures that the deceased’s ID card is invalid and cannot be misused. To obtain the certificate, a blood relative with a valid NIC/NICOP must visit a NADRA Registration Center (NRC) with the deceased’s death certificate issued by the Union Council. The original ID card of the deceased will be destroyed at the NRC to prevent misuse.
Scenarios for ID Card Cancellation
1. Cancellation Due to Death (CNIC/CRC/NICOP/POC)
Immediate family members, including parents, siblings, children, or spouses of a deceased Pakistani citizen or former Pakistani national, can apply for ID card cancellation.
2. Cancellation Due to Surrender of Pakistani Nationality (CNIC/NICOP/CRC)
Pakistani citizens who have formally renounced or surrendered their nationality by acquiring foreign citizenship (with a valid foreign passport) and are not permitted dual nationality can apply under this category.
3. Cancellation Due to Dual Nationality Agreement or Resuming Pakistani Nationality (POC)
Ex-Pakistanis who previously obtained a POC after surrendering Pakistani nationality and acquiring foreign citizenship (with a valid foreign passport) can apply for POC cancellation if:
-
The federal government announces a dual nationality agreement with their current country of citizenship, or
-
They reacquire Pakistani nationality.
4. Cancellation Due to Divorce (POC for Foreign Spouse Only)
A Pakistani spouse can apply for the cancellation of their ex-spouse’s POC (foreigner) following a divorce.
5. Cancellation Due to Holding Multiple ID Cards (DUP Status)
Citizens holding duplicate ID cards must visit the nearest NADRA office, either inland or abroad. Overseas Pakistanis can also email [email protected]
