Canada issues advisory on immigration marriages purposes in 2025

01 October, 2025 13:45

Canada has issued an advisory warning citizens and permanent residents to be cautious about entering into marriage or relationships solely for immigration purposes.

Officials explained that some people see marriage to a Canadian citizen as a shortcut to settle in the country. However, these “relationships of convenience” are not genuine partnerships and can lead to serious legal consequences.

A “relationship of convenience” is when a marriage, common-law, or conjugal relationship is created mainly to help a foreign partner immigrate to Canada, rather than being based on love or genuine connection.

Immigration officers are trained to detect such cases. They carefully review documents, conduct interviews, and look for red flags in applications. Some warning signs of possible fraud include:

  • Quick or sudden marriages

  • A partner with a history of multiple marriages or common-law relationships

  • Very little knowledge about each other’s family or background

Authorities stressed that Canadians involved in such fraudulent relationships could face criminal charges. They also emphasized that only genuine marriages and partnerships should be used as the basis for spousal or partner sponsorship.
