UN Warns of Al-Qaeda and TTP Expansion in Afghanistan, Threat to Regional Security

16 October, 2025 13:52

A new report presented to the United Nations Security Council confirmed the undeniable presence of Al-Qaeda and TTP militants inside Afghanistan. The report, prepared by the 36th Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team, raised serious concerns about rising terrorist activity under Afghanistan’s current de facto authorities.

According to the report, groups like Al-Qaeda and TTP are operating with freedom and face little resistance. These extremist groups are becoming a major threat to the security of Central Asia and nearby regions. Most Al-Qaeda members in Afghanistan are Arab fighters who once fought alongside the Taliban. These fighters are now spread across six Afghan provinces, including Ghazni, Helmand, Kandahar, Kunar, Uruzgan, and Zabul.

The report also confirms the existence of multiple terrorist training camps inside Afghanistan. At least three new camps have been identified where Al-Qaeda and TTP militants are being trained. These camps are believed to be used for combat preparation and spreading extremist ideology.

In paragraph 19 of the report, it is revealed that TTP currently has around 6,000 fighters inside Afghanistan. The group has access to a large variety of weapons, making its recent attacks more deadly and difficult to control.

The United Nations has warned that long-term peace in the region is impossible unless these terrorist support networks are dismantled. International cooperation and strong action are necessary to prevent further expansion of these groups and to protect regional stability.
