Modi Uses Anti-Muslim Hate to Win Elections
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been accused of using hate and violence against Muslims as a political weapon to win elections. Human rights groups, global media, and independent journalists have repeatedly reported a pattern where the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), in alliance with Hindu extremist groups like the RSS, increases anti-Muslim rhetoric and actions during election seasons.
According to Al Jazeera, during elections in BJP-ruled states, there is a noticeable rise in hate speeches against Muslims. Social media is flooded with anti-Muslim content, fueling tensions and spreading fear. Indian mainstream media, often referred to as “Godi Media” (media that favors the government), portrays Muslims as criminals or enemies of the nation.
Reports say that violent acts such as attacks on Muslim homes, businesses, and even killings are treated as normal by many Indian media outlets. Shockingly, Hindu extremists are even seen celebrating such attacks.
Al Jazeera also highlights that journalists who report on anti-Muslim violence face harassment and threats.
According to Reuters, there were 668 hate speech incidents against Muslims in 2023. This number rose to 1,165 in 2024. The Indian news site The Quint reported at least 184 anti-Muslim hate crimes between April and May 2024 alone.
This growing trend of violence, harassment, and hatred against Muslims has become a regular feature of Modi’s rule. Critics say that Modi stokes anti-Muslim sentiments to gain support from right-wing Hindu voters. This, they argue, shows a deep level of political manipulation and moral decline in Indian politics.
