Jury Awards $10 Million to Teacher Shot by Six-Year-Old Student

Virginia: A jury in Virginia has awarded $10 million to former teacher Abby Zwerner, who was shot by a six-year-old student in her classroom.

The jury ruled in Zwerner’s civil lawsuit against Ebony Parker, a former assistant principal at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Virginia. Zwerner had claimed that Parker ignored repeated warnings that the child had a gun in class.

Zwerner, 28, was shot in January 2023 while sitting at a reading table in her first-grade classroom. She spent nearly two weeks in the hospital, underwent six surgeries, and still does not have full use of her left hand. The bullet narrowly missed her heart and remains in her chest.

Zwerner had originally sought $40 million in damages. Her lawyer, Diane Toscano, said the verdict sends a clear message that school safety must be a top priority.

Zwerner’s legal team argued that Parker failed to act after multiple staff members reported that the student had a gun in his backpack. Toscano told the jury, “It’s Dr. Parker’s job to believe this is possible and investigate thoroughly.”

The jury’s decision highlights the importance of school safety and accountability for administrators.
