Kuwait Urges Global Pressure on Israel to Allow IAEA Nuclear Inspections

Kuwait called on the international community to compel the Zionist authority to put its nuclear facilities under the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) supervision. 

Talal Al-Fassam, the state of Kuwait’s ambassador to Austria, called on Friday for the international community to fulfill its obligations and force the Israeli occupation into placing its nuclear sites under the full safeguards system of the IAEA.

The State of Kuwait Ambassador to Austria Talal Al-Fassam on Friday urged the international community to uphold its responsibilities and coerce the Israeli occupation into placing its nuclear sites under the IAEA comprehensive safeguards system.

Speaking at an IAEA Board of Governors meeting on Israeli nuclear potential, he stated that the state of Kuwait supports the Arab Group’s remarks on the matter and reiterates the UN Nuclear Watchdog’s crucial role as the body authorized to examine the safeguards and confirm the nuclear programs’ peaceful nature.

The KUNA in this regard stated that the ambassador emphasized that all Middle Eastern states follow the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and adhere to the comprehensive safeguards measures, with the exception of Israel, which refuses to place its nuclear facilities under the agency’s observation. The NPT revision conventions since 1995 state that any actions render the Middle East free of nuclear arms and weapons of mass destruction (WMD).

He said that the Israeli occupation is still not adhering to international legitimacy, namely UNSC Resolution 487, which mandates that all nuclear sites be subject to safeguards. He is also the Permanent Representative to the International Organizations in Vienna.

The Kuwaiti ambassador also mentioned Tel Aviv’s disregard for the 1995 NPT revision conference and the 53rd session of the IAEA General Conference (2009) resolution concerning Israeli nuclear capabilities.

He emphasized that this issue should be on the IAEA agenda until concrete actions are taken to address it.
