Ceasefire Takes Effect Between Thailand, Cambodia

A ceasefire has finally taken effect following ongoing border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia.

According to a foreign news agency, the agreement—reached after three days of negotiations—came into force at 5:00 pm local time on Saturday.

In a joint statement, both countries agreed to an immediate ceasefire, a halt to all military movements, and the safe return of displaced civilians to their homes in border areas. They also announced joint cooperation to counter sabotage and cybercrime.

Under the agreement, 18 Cambodian soldiers detained in Thailand since July will be released after the 72-hour ceasefire period.

It is worth noting that at least 101 people were killed, while more than five million people were displaced during the 20-day border conflict.

The dispute between Thailand and Cambodia over sovereignty in unclear sections of their 817-kilometre-long border has persisted for over a century, periodically escalating into armed clashes.
