Who is Sukhrob Akhmedov? Russian General Removed by Putin After Battlefield Failures

14 January, 2026 16:44

Russian President Vladimir Putin has removed Lieutenant General Sukhrob Akhmedov, one of Russia’s previously most celebrated military commanders, from his senior naval post following criticism over heavy losses in Ukraine.

Akhmedov, 51, had served as Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy for Coastal and Ground Forces and was awarded Russia’s prestigious Hero of Russia medal just a year ago. His sudden dismissal marks a dramatic fall from grace amid escalating scrutiny over military setbacks.

From Decorated Commander to Dismissal

Akhmedov was once publicly praised by the Kremlin for alleged achievements in Russia’s border operations, particularly around the Kursk area. However, his reputation suffered after reports of failed offensives and catastrophic decisions in eastern Ukraine.

The general has been widely blamed for a mechanised assault near Pokrovsk late last year. Ukrainian forces reportedly destroyed advancing Russian tanks and armoured vehicles within minutes. Viral footage showed burning equipment and scattered soldiers, turning the assault into a symbol of Russia’s ongoing military struggles.

Past Incidents Resurface

Criticism of Akhmedov intensified after renewed attention on a 2023 Kreminna incident, in which Russian troops were allegedly forced to stand in formation in open terrain for hours during a speech. Ukrainian artillery reportedly struck the exposed soldiers, killing dozens.

Russian military analysts and pro-war bloggers have openly blamed Akhmedov for negligence, noting that internal connections within the military may have previously shielded him from accountability.

A Symbol of Systemic Problems

Akhmedov’s rise and sudden removal have been seen as emblematic of structural issues within Russia’s military leadership, where political loyalty and connections have sometimes outweighed battlefield competence. Critics argue that repeated mismanagement has led to unnecessary casualties and ongoing strategic failures.

Despite his removal, Russia continues to face severe operational challenges in Ukraine. Ukrainian forces have stepped up attacks both on frontlines and inside Russian territory.

Growing Pressure Inside Russia

The conflict has also placed pressure on Russian civilians. In the Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine, authorities warned residents to prepare for possible evacuation amid ongoing attacks. Infrastructure damage has disrupted electricity, water, sanitation, and mobile networks for hundreds of thousands of residents.

Akhmedov’s dismissal underscores the mounting strain on Russia’s military leadership and highlights the increasing human and strategic costs of the war.
