Pakistan will not join Abraham Accords; stance on Palestine unchanged: FO Spokesperson
Islamabad, Thursday: Pakistan has clearly stated that it will not join the Abraham Accords. The government reaffirmed that its stance on the Palestinian issue remains unchanged.
Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi made the statement during a weekly press briefing in Islamabad.
No Link Between Board of Peace and Abraham Accords
Responding to media reports, Andrabi rejected claims that Pakistan’s participation in the Board of Peace is linked to the Abraham Accords.
He called such reports a misconception. He said joining the Board of Peace does not mean any shift in Pakistan’s long-standing policy on Palestine.
“Pakistan’s principled position on Palestine remains firm,” he said.
The FO spokesperson said the decision to join the Board of Peace was taken collectively by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He added that all relevant stakeholders were consulted and all procedural requirements were completed before the decision was finalised.
Andrabi said Pakistan joined the Board of Peace to support peace efforts in Gaza.
He said the main goals include helping sustain the ceasefire, supporting post-conflict reconstruction, and promoting a just and lasting peace.
He stressed that Pakistan supports the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.
The spokesperson said Pakistan is not alone in this initiative.
He said seven other Muslim-majority countries have also joined the Board of Peace. These include Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, and Qatar.
Responding to a question about the US travel advisory for Pakistan, Andrabi said it is not a downgrade but an update.
He said some earlier security-related points have been removed from the advisory.
This, he added, makes travel to Pakistan easier for US citizens.
The FO spokesperson said Pakistan is a safe and welcoming country for international travellers.
He said the government is working to ensure the safety and convenience of tourists.
He added that Pakistan and the United States remain in contact through diplomatic channels to facilitate travel for citizens of both countries.
