US Approves $9 Billion Patriot Missile Sale to Saudi Arabia

31 January, 2026 10:02

The United States has approved a major arms sale to Saudi Arabia involving Patriot air defense missiles. The deal is estimated to be worth $9 billion, according to the Pentagon.

The approval was granted by the U.S. State Department. The announcement was made on Friday through an official statement.

What the Deal Includes

Saudi Arabia has requested to buy 730 Patriot interceptor missiles. These missiles are known as Patriot Advanced Capability-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (PAC-3 MSE) missiles.

These systems are designed to defend against ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and aerial threats. They are considered one of the most advanced air defense weapons in the world.

Lockheed Martin Named as Main Contractor

The Pentagon confirmed that Lockheed Martin will be the principal contractor for this potential sale.

Lockheed Martin is a leading U.S. defense company. It already supplies Patriot missile systems to several allied countries.

No Impact on Regional Military Balance

U.S. officials said the proposed sale will not change the military balance in the Middle East.

They also stated that the deal will not affect U.S. defense readiness. The missiles will come from production lines without weakening American military stockpiles.

Strategic Importance of the Sale

Saudi Arabia has faced repeated missile and drone threats in recent years. Most of these attacks came from regional conflicts.

The Patriot system is seen as a key tool for protecting critical infrastructure and civilian areas.

U.S. officials believe the sale will strengthen Saudi Arabia’s ability to defend itself while supporting long-term regional stability.
