Japan Issues Megaquake Warning After 7.5 Magnitude Earthquake Triggers Tsunami Alert

Japan has issued a special earthquake advisory following a powerful 7.5-magnitude tremor that struck the northern region, raising concerns about the possibility of a much larger seismic event.

The strong earthquake shook buildings across wide areas, with tremors felt even in Tokyo, located hundreds of kilometres away. Authorities also issued a tsunami warning, cautioning that waves could reach heights of up to three metres.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, “the likelihood of a new, huge earthquake occurring is relatively higher than during normal times.” The advisory highlights an increased risk of earthquakes measuring magnitude 8.0 or higher.

Japan remains highly sensitive to such warnings due to the devastating impact of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, a 9.0-magnitude undersea quake that resulted in nearly 18,500 deaths or missing persons and caused a nuclear crisis at Fukushima.

Experts are particularly monitoring the Nankai Trough, an 800-kilometre seismic zone where tectonic activity between the Philippine Sea plate and the continental plate poses a significant threat. Authorities have warned that a major quake in this region could lead to catastrophic consequences, including up to 298,000 fatalities and economic losses reaching $2 trillion.

In recent years, the Japan Meteorological Agency has issued multiple advisories regarding potential “megaquakes.” A similar warning was released in 2024 and again in December 2025 after another 7.5-magnitude tremor struck off the northern coast, triggering smaller tsunami waves and causing injuries.

While no major damage has been reported from the latest earthquake, officials continue to monitor the situation closely as the country braces for possible aftershocks or further seismic activity.
