China Hunan Fireworks Factory Blast Kills 21, Injures 61
A devastating explosion at a fireworks factory in China’s Hunan province has killed 21 people and injured 61 others, prompting President Xi Jinping to order a comprehensive investigation into the incident, according to state media reports.
The blast occurred in Changsha, the provincial capital and a major hub for fireworks manufacturing, at approximately 4:40 PM on Monday (0840 GMT), as reported by CCTV and Xinhua News Agency.
“speedy investigation to determine the cause of the blast and strict accountability for the incident”
Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the explosion. However, President Xi Jinping has called for a “speedy investigation to determine the cause of the blast and strict accountability for the incident,” emphasizing the need for improved industrial safety standards across the country.
Videos circulating on Chinese social media showed large plumes of thick smoke rising from the site, along with collapsed buildings and widespread debris. Reuters reported it could not independently verify the footage.
Emergency response teams, including nearly 500 firefighters, medical workers, and rescue personnel, were deployed to the scene to control the fire and assist victims, according to the South China Morning Post.
The explosion reportedly took place at Huasheng Fireworks Manufacturing and Display Company, although official contact details for the firm could not be independently confirmed.
China remains the world’s largest exporter of fireworks, accounting for more than two-thirds of global sales, with exports valued at $1.14 billion last year, according to economic data.
Following the tragedy, Xi Jinping also instructed authorities to strengthen risk monitoring, improve hazard control in high-risk industries, and enhance overall public safety measures to protect lives and property.
The incident comes just days after Xi urged nationwide improvements in disaster preparedness and emergency response systems, highlighting growing concerns over industrial safety in China.
