18 May, 2026 18:15

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a high-level heatwave alert for many parts of Pakistan from May 19 to May 26 as temperatures are expected to rise to dangerous levels.

According to the alert, several areas in Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan may face extremely hot weather for three to five consecutive days.

In Punjab, cities likely to be affected include Lahore, Multan, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Muzaffargarh, Vehari and Khanewal.

In Sindh, severe heat is expected in Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, Tharparkar, Mirpurkhas, Badin and nearby areas.

Balochistan districts including Turbat, Sibi, Lasbela, Panjgur and Nasirabad are also expected to experience intense heat conditions.

NDMA warned that long exposure to extreme heat can cause dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke, especially among children, elderly people and outdoor workers.

The authority said humidity in lower Sindh and dry weather conditions in Punjab and Balochistan could make the heat even more dangerous.

Officials also warned that the heatwave may increase electricity demand and put pressure on hospitals and healthcare services. Agriculture, livestock and workers may also be affected.

District administrations have been instructed to activate emergency heatwave plans, set up cooling camps and ensure proper water supply in affected areas.

Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during afternoon hours, drink plenty of water and take precautions to stay safe during the heatwave.
