Ashura Day Observed Across Pakistan to Honor Martyrs of Karbala

26 June, 2026 08:54

Youm-e-Ashur, the 10th of Muharram is being celebrated across the country in memory of the great sacrifices of the grandson of the Prophet (PBUH) Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and the martyrs of Karbala. In this regard, mourning processions have started taking out in small and big cities. Marking a time of deep reflection millions mourn the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA)—the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) alongside 72 family members and companions, who chose martyrdom at Karbala over bowing down to a tyrannical regime.

Nationwide Commemorations

From major metropolitan hubs to smaller towns, the country paused as large-scale mourning and Zuljanah processions filled the streets.

In Lahore, thousands of devotees joined the main procession emerging from Nisar Haveli, navigating its traditional, centuries-old routes through the Walled City before its scheduled conclusion at Imambargah Gamay Shah. Meanwhile, in Karachi, the city’s central procession commenced from Nishtar Park, heading toward the Hussnainia Irania Imambargah in Kharadar.

Similar religious gatherings took place across the country:

  • Peshawar: Nine distinct processions were organized, with the main body departing from Imambargah Syed Alam Shah in the afternoon.
  • Quetta: Mourners gathered on Alamdar Road for the city’s primary procession.
  • Regional Cities: Large processions were also reported in Hyderabad, Jhang, Dera Ismail Khan, and Sanghar.

Demonstrating community solidarity, volunteers and local authorities set up sabeels (stalls) along the routes, distributing free milk and water to the participants enduring the summer heat.

Stringent Security and Surveillance

Given the massive scale of the public gatherings, law enforcement agencies were placed on maximum alert to prevent any untoward incidents.

A massive security blanket was thrown over major cities. In Lahore alone, more than 20,000 police personnel were deployed along the route. In cities like Peshawar, central commercial districts and procession routes were completely sealed off to vehicular traffic.

To ensure airtight security, standard operating procedures included closing shops along the paths, strict body searches at entry points, and monitoring the crowds in real-time through hidden CCTV networks managed by central control rooms. Both police and Rangers personnel remain heavily deployed until the final processions safely culminate.
