12 July, 2026 14:25

Iran and Oman have agreed to continue political and technical negotiations on maritime security and future shipping arrangements in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei. The discussions, held in Muscat on Saturday, were led by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his Omani counterpart, Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, and focused on coordinating navigation and shipping between the two coastal states.

Baghaei said legal and technical delegations from both countries participated in the talks, which addressed maritime safety and security in accordance with the sovereign rights of Iran and Oman, applicable international law, and Article 5 of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). He added that any future framework governing navigation through the Strait of Hormuz should be developed through consultations between the two countries while taking into account the security implications of what Iran described as the latest round of US-Israeli aggression.

The spokesperson also said representatives from Qatar attended part of the negotiations, highlighting Doha’s role in facilitating recent talks between Tehran and Washington. The discussions underscore ongoing regional diplomatic efforts aimed at maintaining maritime security and ensuring coordination over one of the world’s most strategically important shipping routes.
