AJK Government Says Armed Elements Tried to Disrupt Democratic Process in Rawalakot

28 July, 2026 19:57

Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Information Secretary Muhammad Rashid Hanif said miscreants attempted to sabotage the democratic process by creating unrest during the election period. He alleged that armed groups carried out violent actions in Rawalakot and sought to challenge the writ of the state through organized disturbances.

Hanif claimed the individuals involved could no longer be described as peaceful protesters, alleging that they had become armed militants. He said the government would take decisive action against those responsible in accordance with the law. Meanwhile, an AJK Police spokesperson said the armed groups were equipped with modern and automatic weapons.

The Information Secretary said peaceful, transparent, and free elections had been successfully held in Mirpur Division despite the unrest. According to the AJK Police spokesperson, five police personnel were injured after armed individuals opened fire during the violence, adding that authorities were continuing efforts to restore order and pursue those involved.
