Hong Kong Lyricist Peter Lai Passes Away at 76

Well-known Hing Kong Lyricist Peter Lai, recognize as one of the architects of the golden era of Cantonese pop music has passed away at 76 after complications from a stroke suffered earlier this year.

The news confirmed on Wednesday morning through Lai’s family after being hospitalized following a stroke His son and a longtime friend announced the news during a press conference.

Lai, widely famous as “The Lyrical Maverick,” grown extensive acknowledgement for writing the lyrics to some of Hong Kong’s biggest Cantopop classics, including Leslie Cheung’s 1984 hit “Monica.” In addition to Leslie Cheung, Lai wrote songs for Cantopop legends Sam Hui and Anita Mui, playing a major role in the accomplishment of Hong Kong’s music industry.

In a whole-hearted acknowledgement, Sam Hui express thanks Lai for making plentiful unforgettable songs, and admiring his expressive and significant lyrics.

Lai was one of the pioneers of Cantopop songwriting, writing lyrics that resonated with ordinary people inspired by everyday life. His songs frequently depicted the unremarkable experiences of normal persons’ life, making his work intensely important during Hong Kong’s economic boom in the 1970s and 1980s.

Following the announcement of his death, fans and fellow artists shared heartfelt tributes on social media, remembering Peter Lai as one of the most influential songwriters in Hong Kong’s music history.
