Renowned Music Writer Dave Marsh Dies, Aged 76

Renowned music critic and biographer Dave Marsh widely recognized for his work on Bruce Springsteen, has passed away aged 76.

Marsh died on Friday at his home in Connecticut. His cause of death has not been made public, although reports say he had faced health problems in recent years.

Marsh’s birth and his upbringing was done in Michigan, his love for music was deeply influenced by Detroit’s rich music culture. His reporting job started in the late 1960s, editing a music magazine before moving to other publications and then become an associate editor at Rolling Stone.

His profile grew significantly in 1979, and published a highly influential biography of Bruce Springsteen. The bestselling book helped build Marsh’s reputation as one of the most influential music writers of his generation. He was among the early critics to recognise Springsteen’s talent and continued to update and expand the biography over the years.

Throughout his career, Marsh wrote more than two dozen books, including biographies of several major music artists. He also won a Grammy Award in the early 1990s for his writing on an album by Aretha Franklin.

Later, Marsh hosted a long-running radio programme and helped launch a radio station dedicated to Springsteen’s music. Beyond music, he was also involved in advocacy work, particularly on healthcare access and social justice.

Marsh is survived by his wife. His two daughters died before him.
