Iran Denies Trump’s Secret Talks Claim, Says Forces Remain on High Alert

18 August, 2026 10:46

Tehran: Iran has strongly rejected US President Donald Trump’s claim that Washington and Tehran are engaged in secret backchannel negotiations, describing the assertion as false and a psychological tactic aimed at influencing Iran’s decision-making.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said no secret or undisclosed negotiations with US officials are currently taking place over the conflict.

Speaking to Iran’s Tasnim News Agency, IRGC spokesman Hossein Mahvi dismissed Trump’s claims and said there had been no hidden discussions between Iranian and American officials regarding the ongoing confrontation.

He described the US president’s statements as completely unfounded and argued that such claims were being used to create a particular narrative around the conflict.

Mahvi stressed that the IRGC represents a major component of Iran’s national defence structure and said the force would continue to communicate its position through its military posture, while diplomatic institutions handle their respective responsibilities.

According to the IRGC spokesman, Iranian Foreign Ministry officials and available documented information indicate that Tehran is currently not engaged in negotiations with Washington.

He attributed Iran’s position to what he described as repeated US violations of commitments and previous experiences that have significantly reduced Tehran’s confidence in Washington.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei also rejected reports circulating in US media about alleged informal and secret meetings between Iranian and American officials in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region or Erbil.

Baghaei described the reports as fabricated and said such narratives were intended to create divisions among Iranian decision-making institutions and influence Tehran’s internal calculations.

He maintained that Iran’s negotiating team continues to enjoy the confidence of the country’s institutions and defence establishment and that Tehran has an established decision-making mechanism.

Baghaei further stated that Iran’s armed forces remain on high alert amid the continuing confrontation.

The Iranian official’s comments underline Tehran’s position that its military and political institutions remain coordinated and prepared to respond to any potential escalation.

Iran’s rejection of the alleged secret talks comes shortly after Trump publicly claimed that his administration had established backchannel communications with elements of Iran’s leadership.

The conflicting statements highlight the deep uncertainty surrounding diplomatic contacts between Washington and Tehran, with Iran publicly insisting that no secret negotiations are currently taking place.

For Tehran, the priority remains maintaining coordination between its political, diplomatic and military institutions while keeping its armed forces prepared for any further escalation.
