Iran’s Stark Warning to Trump: US Blockade in Hormuz Could Trigger a Fierce Response

18 August, 2026 10:26

Tehran: Iran has issued a strong warning to the United States, saying it could launch a forceful military operation to break the reported US naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz if Washington fails to implement an interim peace agreement within the next few weeks.

A senior Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran has set a limited timeframe for the United States to fulfil its commitments under the proposed arrangement. Failure to do so, the official warned, could lead Iran to escalate tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and other strategic areas across the region.

Iran Sets Deadline for US

According to the Iranian official, Washington would be expected to fully and unconditionally implement the agreed provisions within the specified timeframe.

The official said compliance with the arrangement would be a fundamental condition for any further diplomatic engagement between Tehran and Washington.

Iran has reportedly conveyed its position through international mediators, who are expected to communicate Tehran’s demands and deadline to the United States and other regional countries.

Tehran Threatens Military Response

The Iranian official warned that if diplomatic efforts fail and Washington does not fulfil its commitments, Tehran could take what he described as timely and highly precise military action to challenge the US naval presence and blockade.

Iranian military and defence institutions have reportedly been instructed to remain prepared for a possible escalation around the Strait of Hormuz and other strategically important areas.

The official said Tehran was prepared to take difficult decisions and implement practical measures if the situation deteriorated further.

Iran Signals Shift in Strategy

The Iranian official also claimed that Tehran is reconsidering its approach towards the ongoing confrontation with Washington.

According to him, Iran is moving from a primarily defensive posture towards a more assertive strategy as confidence in the benefits of continued diplomacy with the United States declines.

The official argued that previous experiences had reduced Iranian confidence that Washington would remain committed to either temporary or permanent ceasefire arrangements.

Strait of Hormuz at Centre of Tensions

The Strait of Hormuz remains central to the latest confrontation because of its strategic importance to global energy supplies.

Iran has repeatedly emphasised the importance of its position in the waterway, while tensions involving US military forces in the region have raised concerns over the possibility of further escalation.

The Iranian warning indicates that Tehran is prepared to increase pressure if diplomatic commitments are not honoured within the stated timeframe.

For now, the situation remains centred on diplomacy, with international mediators attempting to keep communication channels open. However, Tehran’s latest message makes clear that Iran is preparing for a significantly tougher response if negotiations fail and the reported blockade remains in place.
