Modi Government’s Economic Failure: Indian Graduates Struggle to Find Jobs Despite Degrees

20 August, 2026 08:07

India’s worsening employment crisis is casting a shadow over the future of millions of young people, with growing numbers of educated graduates struggling to secure suitable jobs despite years of investment in education.

The rising unemployment among educated youth is also raising questions over the economic growth claims repeatedly promoted by the Modi government and the BJP.

According to The New York Times, around 40 percent of Indian graduates under the age of 25 are facing serious difficulties in finding employment, highlighting the widening gap between education and job opportunities.

The growing number of graduates entering the labour market has reportedly outpaced the availability of suitable employment opportunities, leaving many young Indians facing an uncertain future.

Bloomberg News reporter Ruchi Bhatia has highlighted the difficulties faced by Indian youngsters who spend large amounts of money on education but continue to struggle to find stable and better-paying employment.

For many Indian families, education represents a major financial investment. However, limited employment opportunities after graduation are making it increasingly difficult for young people to recover that investment through meaningful careers.

The widening gap between education and employment is becoming one of the major challenges facing India’s young population. Despite obtaining university degrees, many graduates are unable to find jobs matching their qualifications.

Akshay Saxena, founder of an Indian educational fellowship programme, has pointed to the growing disconnect between education and employment, saying it raises serious questions about the future prospects of Indian youth.

Bloomberg journalist Dan Strumpf has also highlighted the difficulties facing Indian young people as they attempt to move from education into the workforce.

The employment crisis presents a significant challenge for a country with one of the world’s largest young populations. If the economy fails to generate enough quality jobs for educated workers, the growing number of graduates could increasingly face unemployment, underemployment and financial uncertainty.

The situation also puts pressure on the Modi government to address the gap between economic growth figures and the employment opportunities available to ordinary young Indians.

For millions of Indian families investing heavily in education, a university degree is expected to provide a pathway toward a stable and prosperous future. However, the growing shortage of suitable jobs is making that promise increasingly difficult to fulfil.
