Trump Threatens Tougher Response After Iranian Retaliatory Strikes

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has threatened a tougher response against Iran following Iranian retaliatory strikes on American military targets in the Middle East, saying Washington will respond to Tehran’s actions.

Tensions escalated after the United States carried out a military strike on Iran’s Larak Island near the Strait of Hormuz. US officials said two Iranian missile launchers were targeted, while Iranian authorities reported that two people were killed and several others wounded.

According to US Central Command, American forces conducted a “limited and highly precise” operation against targets on Larak Island.

Washington said members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps were preparing to launch rockets capable of deploying sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz. The United States described the alleged preparations as an immediate threat to maritime traffic in the strategic waterway.

Iran condemned the operation as an act of aggression and responded with missile attacks against US military positions in the region.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said Iranian forces launched ballistic missiles at two military bases in Jordan where US personnel are stationed.

Iran said the attacks caused significant damage to American military facilities. The United States has not confirmed the extent of the reported damage.

Jordanian authorities said their air-defence forces intercepted eight missiles that entered the country’s airspace. However, officials did not provide details about where the missiles had been launched.

Iran also said it targeted Al Minhad Air Base in the United Arab Emirates, where US personnel are present.

The UAE rejected reports of a missile attack on the base, describing the reports as unfounded.

However, the UAE Ministry of Defence confirmed that its air-defence forces had intercepted an Iranian drone over its territorial waters. Abu Dhabi condemned the incident as a dangerous escalation and said it violated the country’s sovereignty and security.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry described the attacks against US targets in Jordan as an act of legitimate defence.

Tehran said its military response came after the latest American strikes against Iranian positions and warned that attacks against Iran would have consequences.

The latest exchange of fire has significantly increased tensions between Washington and Tehran, raising concerns that the confrontation could once again develop into a wider regional conflict.

Trump’s warning came shortly after Iran’s retaliatory strikes.

The US president said Washington would respond forcefully to Iran, signalling that further American military action remains possible.

His remarks have heightened concerns over another round of military escalation between the two countries, particularly as American forces remain deployed at several locations across the Middle East.
