Putin Declares Open Support for Iran Against US and Israeli Pressure

BISHKEK: Russian President Vladimir Putin met his Iranian counterpart, Masoud Pezeshkian, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek, reaffirming Moscow’s commitment to strengthening ties with Tehran.
According to international media reports, Putin assured the Iranian president that Russia would continue standing with Iran amid the ongoing military and political confrontation involving the United States and Israel.
The Russian president also expressed his determination to maintain economic and trade relations with Iran despite US sanctions, stressing that the current political and military tensions would not prevent Moscow and Tehran from expanding their bilateral cooperation.
Russia Vows to Maintain Economic Ties
The Iranian presidency said the two leaders discussed ways to further develop cooperation across multiple areas, including economic relations, trade, energy and other fields of mutual interest.
Putin’s commitment comes as Washington continues to threaten additional sanctions against countries and entities that maintain economic cooperation with Iran.
US pressure could increasingly extend to major powers such as Russia and China, both of which maintain extensive political and economic relations with Tehran.
Despite the threat of secondary sanctions, Moscow has continued to pursue closer economic engagement with Iran.
Moscow and Tehran Deepen Strategic Cooperation
Russia and Iran have significantly expanded cooperation in recent years, particularly in defence, energy, trade and regional affairs.
The two countries have sought to strengthen their economic and strategic partnership despite growing Western pressure and sanctions targeting both Moscow and Tehran.
Their cooperation has also gained importance amid wider geopolitical shifts, with Russia and Iran increasingly seeking alternative economic and political partnerships beyond the traditional Western sphere.
The meeting between Putin and Pezeshkian in Bishkek underscores the continued strengthening of relations between Moscow and Tehran.
