Spanish PM Pedro Sánchez’s Strong UN Message: Netanyahu Still Perpetrating Genocide in Gaza

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has strongly criticised Israel’s military operations in Gaza, accusing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of continuing what he described as genocide in the Palestinian territory.

Addressing the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Sánchez reiterated Spain’s opposition to Israel’s actions in Gaza and highlighted measures Madrid has taken in response to the conflict.

Sánchez said Spain had already imposed an arms embargo on Israel and taken other measures, while indicating that Madrid was prepared to consider further steps. Anadolu reported that he described Spain’s condemnation of what he called the genocide in Gaza as unequivocal.

Sánchez has been among the European leaders most critical of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.

Spain has previously introduced restrictions on arms exports to Israel and taken steps aimed at limiting military cooperation in response to the Gaza conflict.

In his UN address, Sánchez linked Spain’s position to its broader call for adherence to the UN Charter and international law.

He also called for reform of the UN Security Council, arguing that all regions should have fair representation and that the veto powers of permanent members should be abolished.

Sánchez also met UN Secretary-General António Guterres before his General Assembly address, with discussions focusing on Gaza and the wider situation in the Middle East, according to the Spanish government’s account.

The discussions came as the UN continues to call for greater humanitarian assistance and respect for international law amid the continuing conflict.

Guterres has repeatedly highlighted the severe humanitarian consequences of the Gaza war and called for an end to the fighting and increased humanitarian access.

The Spanish prime minister’s latest remarks add to growing international diplomatic pressure over the situation in Gaza, while Spain continues to advocate for a political resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
