Iran Sets Conditions for Strait of Hormuz Reopening, Keeps US Talks Open

Abbas Araghchi said Iran will consider reopening the Strait of Hormuz once its conditions are met, while keeping the door open for negotiations with Washington.

Speaking to Iranian journalists on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Araghchi said Iran had openly transferred its conditions for reopening the strategic waterway during some meetings. He said the conditions were also conveyed to US officials through mediators.

Araghchi said Tehran had presented several diplomatic proposals but had yet to receive an official response from Washington through the mediators. He added that Iran was aware of US President Donald Trump’s initial remarks but was waiting for a final position before deciding its next steps.

According to Araghchi, both the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and progress in negotiations depend on Iran’s conditions being fulfilled. Under Tehran’s latest proposal, the waterway could return to normal shipping within a week if the required steps are completed, followed by further negotiations.

The Iranian foreign minister said Tehran had demonstrated its capabilities in military, diplomatic and economic fields but maintained that the dispute could ultimately be resolved through negotiations.

He said any diplomatic settlement should be “honorable” and fair while protecting what Tehran considers the legitimate rights of the Iranian people.
