Modi Govt Fails to Stop Human Trafficking, US Raises Serious Concerns
The US State Department has raised serious concerns over India’s failure to effectively combat human trafficking under the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
According to a US State Department report, weak controls by the Indian government have allowed human traffickers to pose a growing threat worldwide.
The report criticised India for failing to fully meet the minimum standards required to eliminate human trafficking. It stated that the Indian government had prosecuted fewer traffickers and secured fewer convictions against those involved in the crime.
The report also highlighted the absence of an inter-ministerial committee and a national action plan to combat human trafficking in India. It said these gaps had weakened institutional efforts to address the problem.
According to the report, Indian traffickers and criminal networks are increasingly becoming associated with international human trafficking, fake degree networks and terrorism.
