Lula and Flavio Bolsonaro Clash in Heated Debate Ahead of Brazil Run-Off Election

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and right-wing Senator Flavio Bolsonaro have exchanged sharp attacks during a televised debate held one week before the presidential run-off election. The debate, the first of two scheduled before voting, was seen as an important opportunity for both candidates to attract undecided voters, with opinion polls suggesting a closely contested race. However, the confrontational tone prompted concerns among analysts that voter frustration could further increase abstention.
In the first round of voting on October 4, Flavio Bolsonaro secured 47% of the vote, narrowly ahead of Lula, who received 45.2%. Neither candidate crossed the 50% threshold required to win outright, forcing a second round. Bolsonaro is representing the Liberal Party, following the political legacy of his father, former president Jair Bolsonaro, who governed Brazil from 2018 to 2022 and was sentenced to more than 20 years in prison over a plot to overturn Lula’s 2022 election victory.
The upcoming run-off is expected to determine Brazil’s political direction amid deep divisions between left-wing and right-wing supporters. Sunday’s debate marked the opening of the final televised face-off, with a second debate scheduled for Friday, two days before polling day. Despite the first-round setback, Lula has urged his supporters to remain confident, declaring that he would “win in extra time” as both campaigns seek to mobilize voters for the decisive contest.
