At least 143 dead in Nepal earthquake

Kathmandu: At least 143 people were killed in an overnight earthquake in a remote region of Nepal, officials said Saturday, as security forces rushed to assist with relief efforts.

The 5.6-greatness shudder hit the furthest west of the Himalayan country late Friday and was estimated by the US Geographical Overview at only 18 kilometers (11 miles) profound. Recordings and photographs posted via web-based entertainment showed local people digging through rubble in obscurity to pull survivors from the destruction of imploded homes and structures.
