PTI moves IHC against election of Senate chief, his deputy

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has challenged the election of Senate chairman and deputy chairman in the Islamabad High Court.

In the petition, it was prayed to the court since the House is incomplete, therefore, the election of Senate chairman and deputy chairman should be stopped.

The core committee said that the House is incomplete, therefore, the election of Senate chairman and deputy chairman is unconstitutional.

It added that without the election of senators from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa the chairman and deputy chairman cannot be elected. The Senate Secretariat cannot make any decision except administrative. The Senate secretary cannot interpret himself the Constitution under pressure.

Without the Senate chairman, the Upper House was reduced to only one department, the PTI’s core committee said and added that action should be taken against those responsible for deactivating the Senate.

For the first time in the democratic era, the Senate became inactive and the Constitutional scheme was undermined, it added.

Meanwhile, President Asif Ali Zardari has convened the Senate session tomorrow.

President Asif Ali Zardari summoned the session of the Senate at 9 am tomorrow (Tuesday).

The new members, during the Senate meeting, will be sworn in and the chairman and deputy chairman of the upper house will also be elected.

It should be noted that after the election on 30 seats of the Upper House (Senate) recently, Pakistan People’s Party has become the largest party with 24 senators.

The number of senators of PTI is 19 while the number of senators of Pakistan Muslim League-N is also 19.

Pakistan People’s Party has nominated senior leader and former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani as the Senate chairman.
