Pakistan’s livestock sector has recorded significant growth over the past 18 years, strengthening the country’s dairy and meat industries.

According to the 7th Agricultural Census 2024 released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, the livestock sector continues to play an important role in the agricultural economy, rural employment, and food security.

The census shows that the total livestock population has increased by 89% over the last 18 years.

The number of buffaloes has risen by 75%, while the goat population has increased by 78%, reaching 95.83 million.

The number of dairy cows has grown by 140%, while dairy buffaloes have increased by 111% during the same period.

Officials said the new digital census system is helping improve livestock data collection, planning, and policymaking.

The growing livestock population is expected to create new opportunities for investment, production, and exports in Pakistan’s dairy, meat, and livestock value chain.

The results highlight the continued growth of Pakistan’s agriculture sector and the increasing importance of livestock in supporting the rural economy.
