Did Beulah Die On Dutton Ranch? Episode 7 Cliffhanger Explained

20 June, 2026 22:29

What was meant to be a night of celebration quickly turned into chaos on Dutton Ranch’s latest episode, “Den of Sin.” As 10 Petal Ranch’s 190th anniversary festivities spiral out of control, 75-year-old ranch matriarch Beulah Jackson collapses and is airlifted from the property. It remains unclear whether she suffered a heart attack or a stroke, but she is left in critical condition by the end of Season 7, Episode 7 — an episode that also features two pivotal 1981 flashbacks shedding light on why Rob-Will’s return to the ranch is considered “dangerous.”

Did Beulah Die On Dutton Ranch? It’s Complicated

As of now, the answer depends on whether Beulah recovers from the medical crisis that befalls her. If she does, she is not dead on the show as of the end of Episode 7. That said, her collapse is set to permanently alter the trajectory of 10 Petal Ranch, both in terms of its current leadership and its future.

The Collapse: Carter Pushes Beulah Over The Edge

The lavish 190th anniversary celebration for 10 Petal Ranch gets off to a rocky start, true to the dramatic tone “Den of Sin” has set for the season. After a drunken Carter becomes upset over Oreana reconnecting with an old flame at the event, he storms into Beulah Jackson’s private office — where she keeps a cherished mounted steer head — and smashes it in front of all the assembled guests. Shortly after, Beulah’s breathing becomes labored as she clutches her throat.

Everett shouts, “Med-evac!” While Everett, Oreana, and Joaquin rush to her side, a now composed Rip is the one who drags the belligerent Carter away. As Beulah is airlifted out by helicopter, it becomes clear that 10 Petal Ranch — and its leadership — has reached a turning point, even as its matriarch lies gravely injured.

The Succession Shock: Rob-Will Forces His Way Into Power

For years, Beulah Jackson’s chosen heir had been Joaquin, a position rooted in decades of respect for his father. However, having spent much of the episode justifying her decisions, Beulah delivers another shock at the anniversary celebration — announcing that Rob-Will, the son of Luke who is returning from drug rehab and has also survived cancer, will take over leadership of 10 Petal Ranch immediately.

Business partner Zane Nash struggles to form a coherent response, unable to hide his distrust and fear of Rob-Will. In short order, Rob-Will declares that a new era has begun at 10 Petal Ranch — revealing that Joaquin has quit, reportedly because he was “tired of being in the shadows” and ready to walk away. Beth and Rip, meanwhile, now find themselves working under Rob-Will’s leadership.

The 1981 Flashbacks: Beulah’s Assault, Pregnancy, And A Hidden Past

To explain the threat that Rob-Will now represents, Episode 7 opens and closes with dual flashback sequences set in 1981 Fort Worth. A young Beulah, accompanied by a ranch hand named Mariano — Joaquin’s father, which sheds light on much of the present-day tension — visits a music hall called Billy Bob’s, essentially a country-western version of the original Hard Rock Cafe. There, she is accosted by a cowboy named Luke.

It’s suggested that Luke was paid by a bartender to distract Mariano so he could approach Beulah without regard for her wellbeing. When Beulah later returns to confront him, she is shown in a torn, bloodied dress, missing one boot. Mariano finds her on the grounds of Billy Bob’s in this state — though, as she tells him in the closing moment, she eventually got the other boot back.

Who Is Mariano? A Lingering Threat

Mariano, father of Joaquin — the once “almost heir” to 10 Petal Ranch — served as young Beulah’s chaperone at Billy Bob’s in the 1981 flashback. More significantly, Mariano was aware of Beulah’s assault and the retribution that followed. In the present day, as he’s shown calling Beulah to ask what’s happening at 10 Petal Ranch, it becomes apparent that he knows far more than the other characters realize, suggesting he’s being set up for a larger role given the ongoing power struggle.

According to The Umbrella Academy and Shadow and Bone star Juan Pablo Raba, who plays Joaquin, Mariano is a character who will continue to “loom” over the story going forward. Raba has noted that, given everything Mariano has sacrificed, it wouldn’t make sense for him not to play a significant role moving forward.
