Pakistan remembers Kashmiri widows on International Widows Day today (Tuesday).

Like other countries of the world, Pakistan also observe the UN International Day of Widows.

Meanwhile, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Senator Shibli Faraz paid tribute to brave Kashmiri women.

On International Widows’ Day, he said that the husbands of Kashmiri widows sacrificed their lives in the struggle for self-determination.

In a tweet, the minister said they fell victims to the Indian oppression.

He saluted to the determination of those Kashmiri half-widows whose husbands subjected to inhuman torture in Indian prisons.

Shibli Faraz paid rich tribute to the valiant Kashmiri women, whose husbands sacrificed their lives for the right to self-determination.

India has subjected them to the worst kind of violence in the Indian torture cells.

Meanwhile,  the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said that the death of a partner can leave many women without rights to inheritance or property.

In his message in a Tweet, he said it’s time to end discriminatory laws that deny women equal rights to men and ensure access to social protection.

The UN estimated 258 million widows around the world, and nearly one in ten live in extreme poverty.

But, it believe the actual number much higher and to grow further as the coronavirus and its related effects on health continue to rage around the world.

As women they have specific needs, but their voices and experiences are often absent from policies that impact their survival.

The United Nations observes 23 June as International Widows Day (resolution A/RES/65/189) since 2011.

It wants to draw attention to the voices and experiences of widows and to galvanize the unique support that they need.

Now more than ever, this day is an opportunity for action towards achieving full rights and recognition for widows.
