Pakistan signs Islamabad MoU as mediator in US-Iran deal
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has formally signed the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as the official mediator between the United States and Iran.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif signed the agreement after it had already been endorsed by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.
A video released by the Prime Minister’s Office shows the prime minister signing the document, which already carries the signatures of both leaders.
Pakistan’s role in mediation
Officials said Pakistan played an important role in facilitating talks between Washington and Tehran over recent months. These efforts helped both sides reach an agreement aimed at reducing tensions and starting a broader diplomatic process.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif described the agreement as a major breakthrough achieved through dialogue, with Pakistan acting as a bridge between the two countries.
Key points of the MoU
The Islamabad MoU provides a framework for ending military tensions and beginning talks on long-term issues such as regional security and Iran’s nuclear programme.
It also includes steps toward reopening the Strait of Hormuz and easing restrictions on maritime trade.
The agreement reportedly came into effect immediately after it was signed by the leaders of the three sides.
Upcoming ceremony
Pakistan, along with Qatar, is expected to take part in a formal ceremony in Switzerland to mark the agreement and begin technical-level discussions on its implementation.
The development is being seen as an important moment for Pakistan’s diplomatic role on the global stage.
