40 Killed, Eight Injured as Passenger Bus Plunges into Ravine Near Balochistan-KP Border

QUETTA: At least 40 people were killed and eight others injured after a passenger bus travelling from Quetta to Peshawar plunged into a deep ravine near the Balochistan–Khyber Pakhtunkhwa border on Friday, officials said.
The accident occurred shortly after the bus crossed from the Dana Sar area of Balochistan’s Sherani district into Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Dera Ismail Khan district.
In a statement, Balochistan Chief Minister’s Adviser for Media and Political Affairs, Shahid Rind, said initial reports indicated that 40 passengers had lost their lives, while eight others sustained injuries in the crash.
Sherani Deputy Commissioner Wali Khan Kakar said the bus had departed Quetta with 36 passengers on board. However, additional passengers reportedly boarded the vehicle after another bus broke down along the route, increasing the number of people travelling on the bus.
According to the district administration, rescue teams and ambulances were dispatched to the scene immediately after the accident. The injured were shifted to nearby medical facilities for treatment, while recovery efforts continued at the site.
The provincial government said rescue operations were launched on the directives of Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti, with authorities coordinating emergency response efforts.
Officials have not yet determined the exact cause of the accident, and an investigation is expected to be launched. Authorities have warned that casualty figures may change as rescue and identification efforts continue.
