A suspect named Nauman, who was in police custody in a fraud case involving student Laiba Ejaz, died in hospital after being injured during a shooting incident in Islamabad.

According to police, Nauman was being taken to recover evidence on his identification when two men on a motorcycle opened fire on the police team. The police said the attackers were trying to help the suspect escape. Nauman was injured in the firing and was taken to hospital, where he later died.

Police said Nauman was named in the case related to Laiba Ejaz, a student who allegedly died by suicide within the jurisdiction of Ramna Police Station. Search operations are underway to arrest his other alleged accomplices.

Laiba Ejaz was a gold medalist at the International Islamic University Islamabad and wanted to pursue higher education in the United States. According to her family, she was promised admission to a US university, a visa and a scholarship in exchange for Rs7 million.

Her father reportedly sold a plot of land and paid Rs2.1 million in advance. However, the family later discovered that the admission documents were fake.

The family alleged that Laiba suffered severe emotional distress after the alleged fraud came to light and died by suicide. Police launched an investigation into the case following the incident.

According to police, Nauman allegedly took a large amount of money from Laiba by promising to arrange higher education, a visa and a scholarship in the United States, and provided fake documents. He was also accused of taking money from nine other people by promising them government jobs.
