Wasim Akram’s Statue at Niaz Stadium Sparks Social Media Jokes

06 June, 2025 15:37

A newly unveiled statue of Pakistan’s cricket legend Wasim Akram at Niaz Stadium in Hyderabad has sparked widespread amusement and criticism across social media platforms. Renowned as the “Sultan of Swing,” Akram is celebrated for his historic achievements in cricket, but the statue intended to honor him is now being mocked by fans for its inaccurate facial features.

The statue meant to capture Akram mid-bowling in Pakistan’s iconic 1999 World Cup kit, has gone viral—though not for the right reasons. Viewers immediately pointed out that the likeness is far from Akram’s actual appearance.

One social media user jokingly remarked that the statue looks more like “Sylvester Stallone than Wasim Akram,” while another posted a still of the cricket legend looking unimpressed, with the caption, “This is probably how Wasim Akram feels right now.”

As memes and sarcastic comments flooded online platforms, several fans urged that Akram himself should request corrections to the statue.

Wasim Akram, who represented Pakistan from 1984 to 2003, remains one of the greatest fast bowlers in history. With 414 Test and 502 ODI wickets, he was instrumental in securing Pakistan’s 1992 World Cup triumph and led the team to the final in the 1999 edition.
