Just a few weeks ago, Connolly shared that his cancer had returned. He also said he would not seek re-election and would step down from his role on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.
In an email dated April 28, Connolly wrote:
“The sun is setting on my time in public service, and this will be my last term in Congress.”
He thanked his supporters in an open letter and spoke of the “grueling treatments” he was undergoing.
A Life of Service
Connolly spent nearly 40 years serving Northern Virginia, both at the local and federal level. His family remembered him as a leader who always fought for justice and fairness.
“His absence will leave a hole in our hearts,” the family wrote.
“But we are proud that his life’s work will endure for future generations.”
A Legacy of Impact
Throughout his career, Connolly was active in key national discussions. He was known for his work on gun violence prevention and foreign affairs. He also had close relationships with national leaders, including President Joe Biden.
