Sweden Reports 30 Mysterious Sabotage Attacks on Telecom Infrastructure Along Key Highway

NATO Ally Reveals Mass Act of Unexplained Sabotage
Swedish authorities have confirmed a wave of unexplained sabotage attacks on critical telecommunications infrastructure, with around 30 incidents recorded along the E22 highway, a major European transport route.
According to SVT Nyheter, Sweden’s national public broadcaster, the attacks involve deliberate cutting of cables and destruction of technical components such as fuses—without any signs of theft.
No Suspects Yet, But Pattern Suggests Coordinated Sabotage
Swedish investigators have not named any suspects, but officials believe the damage may be the work of a single, coordinated actor. The focus of the attacks on the E22 corridor suggests a targeted approach.
“It stands out and is more than usual,” said Roger Gustafsson, Head of Security at the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS).
The E22, also known as the European Road, runs over 3,300 miles, linking the United Kingdom in the west to Russia in the east, making it a strategic route for infrastructure and logistics.
Espionage Concerns Amid Rising Geopolitical Tensions
The incidents come amid a broader trend of sabotage against Sweden’s telecom infrastructure, raising national security concerns. NATO allies have also reported increased Russian espionage activity, prompting speculation about possible foreign interference.
Swedish security services are closely monitoring the situation, and authorities say nothing is being ruled out at this stage.
“We don’t rule anything out,” stated Detective Superintendent Håkan Wessung, head of serious crime investigations in Kalmar, a region affected by the attacks.
No Major Disruptions — Yet
Although the attacks have not led to widespread service outages, officials are treating them seriously due to the potential threat to critical infrastructure.
