Was Carrie Elizabeth Romney Divorced? Mitt Romney’s Sister-in-Law’s Marriage Examined After Her Death

14 October, 2025 15:48

On the evening of Friday, October 10, Carrie Elizabeth Romney — sister-in-law of former U.S. presidential candidate and Utah Senator Mitt Romney — was discovered dead near the parking garage of a shopping mall in the Valencia neighborhood of Santa Clarita, California.

According to law enforcement officials, homicide investigators were summoned to the scene, where their initial assessment indicated that the 64-year-old may have died as a result of either an accidental fall or an intentional jump from the mall’s five-storey parking structure.

Four months prior to her death, Carrie’s husband, George Scott Romney — Mitt Romney’s elder brother — had filed for divorce after eight years of marriage. The filing, submitted on June 10, 2025, cited “irreconcilable differences” as the grounds for separation, as reported by The Independent (UK).

At the time of the incident, Carrie was living apart from George. The couple, who had married in November 2016, had no children together. According to reports, this was George Romney’s third marriage.

In response to the tragedy, Mitt Romney released a brief statement on behalf of the family, expressing their sorrow and saying the Romneys were “heartbroken” over Carrie’s passing. Her estranged husband, George, has not yet issued any public comment.

More than four days after the discovery of Carrie’s body, authorities stated that the medical examination and toxicology reports were still pending. For now, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office has classified the cause of death as “deferred.”

LA County Sheriff’s spokesperson Daniel Vizcarra confirmed the same, explaining, “We don’t know if it was suicide or accidental. There is not enough information to go by yet on what the coroner has given us so far.” Vizcarra added that detectives currently do not suspect foul play and are reviewing potential CCTV footage from cameras near the mall. Carrie’s vehicle was also located in the parking area.

Mitt Romney, who served as governor of Massachusetts from 2004 to 2007, rose to national prominence as the Republican presidential nominee in 2012, when he was defeated by Barack Obama. He later represented Utah in the U.S. Senate from 2018 until his retirement in 2024. Announcing his decision to step down, Romney stated that the challenges facing the country required “a younger generation of leaders,” adding that baby boomers like himself were no longer best positioned “to be making the decisions for tomorrow.”
