US expects Iran’s reply to proposals today, says Marco Rubio
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Washington has not yet received a response from Iran regarding the latest proposals sent to Tehran, but a reply is expected later today.
He said the United States and other countries do not want Iran to develop nuclear weapons under any condition. He added that Washington hopes serious talks with Iran will continue in a positive direction.
Rubio also claimed that the US Navy stopped around 70 oil tankers heading toward Iran. He said Iran wants influence over the Strait of Hormuz, but stressed that no single country can control international sea routes.
He clarified that recent strikes on Iran were not part of any operation called “Epic Fury,” and warned that any missile attack on the United States would face a strong response.
On Lebanon, Rubio said the US will not hold talks with Hezbollah and will only engage with the official Lebanese government.
He also said discussions in Italy did not include any final decision about deploying NATO or US troops, adding that such decisions will be taken by the US President.
On China and Taiwan, Rubio said US policy remains unchanged, although the issue could be discussed during a possible visit by the US President to China.
He further said the United States is ready to help mediate a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, but warned that Washington will not waste time if no real progress is made.
Rubio added that the US will continue diplomatic efforts around the world, but will avoid long negotiations that do not lead to results.
