Iran’s Late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to Be Buried on July 9
The office responsible for preserving and publishing the works of Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has announced the schedule for his farewell, funeral, and burial ceremonies.
According to an official statement, farewell ceremonies for the martyred Leader’s body will be held at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Mosalla on July 4 and 5, corresponding to the 19th and 20th days of Muharram.
A funeral procession in Tehran is planned for July 6, followed by another procession in the holy city of Qom on July 7.
The final funeral ceremony will take place in the holy city of Mashhad on July 9, which coincides with the eve of the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Sajjad (AS). The statement said the martyred Leader will be laid to rest at the holy shrine of Imam Reza (AS).
The organizers invited “all noble and dear people, the free people of the world, followers of the school of Islam, and those interested in Iran” to attend the ceremonies and pay their respects to the martyred Leader.
The statement also thanked government institutions and public groups for making arrangements for the events. It stressed that the people themselves would play the main role in organizing the ceremonies as “the true owners of the mourning,” adding that a large public turnout is expected.
Officials said further details about the ceremonies will be announced later.
Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei was assassinated at his residence in Tehran on February 28 during the conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.
A few days later, Iran’s Assembly of Experts, a body of 88 clerics, elected Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, as the third Leader of the Islamic Revolution. He is the son of Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.
