Iraq Arrests 67 Officials in Major Anti-Corruption Crackdown

29 June, 2026 14:54

Iraqi authorities have arrested 67 individuals, including 13 lawmakers, political figures, government employees, and business owners, as part of a wide-ranging anti-corruption operation. The detainees face allegations of financial corruption, misappropriation of public funds, and involvement in illicit trade, according to the state-run Iraqi News Agency (INA).

The arrests were reportedly triggered by confessions made by former Deputy Oil Minister Adnan al-Jumaili, who was detained last month. Citing a senior official, INA said the investigation expanded following al-Jumaili’s statements, leading authorities to pursue additional suspects linked to the alleged corruption network.

Among those arrested were 13 members of parliament whose parliamentary immunity had been revoked before their detention. The group includes Muthanna al-Samarrai, a prominent Sunni politician and head of the Azm Alliance. Iraqi authorities have not yet released further details on the legal proceedings as investigations continue.
