Right-Wing Candidate Abelardo de la Espriella Wins Colombia Presidential Election

Right-wing candidate Abelardo de la Espriella has narrowly won Colombia’s presidential election, according to an initial vote count, signaling a major shift in the country’s political landscape. Endorsed by former US President Donald Trump, de la Espriella campaigned on promises to strengthen security and take a tougher approach against illegal armed groups, drug trafficking, and organized crime.
De la Espriella appeared to defeat left-wing candidate Iván Cepeda, a close ally of President Gustavo Petro, in a closely contested race. The outcome suggests voters favored a change in strategy for addressing Colombia’s long-running internal conflict and persistent violence.
In his victory remarks, de la Espriella declared that “today begins a new stage for our country,” saying Colombians had chosen “a great, safe, prosperous Colombia full of opportunities.” While the preliminary results point to his victory, the final official certification of the election is expected to follow in accordance with Colombia’s electoral process.
