29 June, 2026 18:09

Southern Iran’s city of Shiraz has carried out more than 16,100 organ transplant surgeries, establishing itself as the country’s busiest and most advanced transplant center, according to health officials. The figures highlight the city’s growing role in Iran’s medical system, particularly in life-saving transplant procedures.

Siavash Gholami, director of the Organ Procurement Office at Abu Ali Sina Hospital in Shiraz, said the facility has performed over 16,100 transplants since its establishment. He added that Fars Province has achieved an organ donation rate of 43.5 donors per million population—more than three times the national average of 13 to 14 donors per million.

Gholami noted that Fars Province now ranks first in Iran both in total transplant surgeries and per capita organ donation rates. He credited increased public awareness and medical infrastructure for the region’s leading position, as reported by Mehr News Agency.
