Iran’s Envoy Urges German Intellectuals to Seek Accountability Over Sardasht Chemical Attack

Iran’s Ambassador to Germany, Majid Nili, has called on German free thinkers and intellectuals to pursue accountability for Western companies and industrial actors that allegedly assisted Saddam Hussein’s regime in acquiring the materials and technology used in the 1987 chemical attack on the Iranian city of Sardasht.
In a message posted on the social media platform X on Wednesday, Nili said he had sent a letter to German intellectuals marking the anniversary of the Sardasht chemical attack. He stated that certain Western companies and industrial entities played a role in enabling Iraq to develop chemical weapons by supplying the necessary materials and technology.
The Iranian envoy stressed that those who supplied or facilitated the resources used in the attack should be held accountable, arguing that confronting the legacy of such actions is essential to preventing similar tragedies in the future. He said acknowledging responsibility would contribute to justice for the victims and strengthen efforts against the proliferation of chemical weapons.
