Over 100 Democrats Vote to Stop US Military Aid to Israel
More than 100 Democratic members of the US House of Representatives voted in favor of stopping billions of dollars in military aid to Israel, highlighting growing divisions within the Democratic Party.
The House approved the overall military aid bill for Israel, but a proposed amendment to block the funding received 104 votes. The amendment was introduced by Republican Congressman Thomas Massie, a frequent critic of President Donald Trump who has also questioned US military support for Israel.
The amendment received support from 103 Democrats and one Republican but was defeated after 314 lawmakers voted against it.
During the vote, 98 Democrats supported continuing military aid to Israel, while 10 members did not vote.
The Democratic leadership was divided on the issue. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Democratic Whip Pete Aguilar voted against the amendment, while Assistant Democratic Leader Katherine Clark voted in favor of ending military aid.
Progressive Democrats described the vote as a historic moment, saying it was the first time that more than 100 lawmakers supported stopping military aid to Israel. They noted that only 37 lawmakers backed a similar proposal two years ago.
Congresswoman Ilhan Omar said the vote sent a clear message to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that many Democrats no longer support unconditional funding for what she described as his war policies.
Congresswoman Summer Lee also called the vote a major shift within the Democratic Party, saying more lawmakers are speaking out against Israel’s actions in Gaza.
