Political tensions between Bangladesh and India have increased after former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina delivered a virtual address at an event held in New Delhi, prompting Dhaka to seek clarification from the Indian government.
According to Reuters, Sheikh Hasina, who has been living in India since leaving Bangladesh in August 2024, addressed a virtual event organized by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of South Asia in New Delhi on August 5. The development led Bangladeshi authorities to ask India for an explanation regarding the platform provided to the former prime minister.
Bangladesh’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid Islam said that India would have to clarify its position on the matter.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs stated that the event was a private function and that the Indian government had no involvement in its organization, according to Reuters.
Political observers in Bangladesh have questioned the decision to allow Sheikh Hasina to engage in political communication from India despite Dhaka’s continued demand for her return. Bangladesh has reportedly sought her extradition, as she faces legal proceedings in the country.
